This blog specifically is addressed to theatre, but I think the same applies in all outlets. I know it’s a struggle, for some of us, to stay humble, and we must stay sensitive to others’ feelings, or at least that’s what we are told. However … never apologize for your accomplishments. They are your accomplishments.
I don’t think you should brag, but don’t discount the work you have done. You worked hard. To not acknowledge your accomplishments would be disrespectful to yourself and the ones who got you there. You’ll thank them in your own way, and maybe you already have.
To not embrace the amazing work you’ve done, on the chance it might rub someone the wrong way, I’m sorry, screw that. You need to blow your trumpet, bang your drum … because not everyone will. I’m not saying I need to do that. I already do that. I’m saying YOU need to do that.
Additionally, there will be people who will say you have an ego, and you aren’t humble. Nope. That is confidence. You need confidence to do your job. And it’s that confidence that helps get you through it and helps you get where you are.
